Welcome to Student Legal Assistance Society (Calgary)

Founded in 1979, Student Legal Assistance (SLA) offers legal information and representation to residents of the Calgary area who are unable to afford a lawyer. These services are provided by law students from the University of Calgary, who volunteer as Caseworkers with the organization. While providing a much-needed community service, the work at SLA allows members to gain experience and develop professional skills.

Our services and initiatives include:

  • Legal Representation: representing clients with criminal, traffic, bylaw, family or civil matters in the Provincial Court of Alberta.
  • Summary Legal Information: providing legal information to clients without ongoing assistance.
  • Legal Outreach Clinics: providing summary legal information through clinics that travel to the Calgary Drop-In & Rehab Centre, Calgary Dream Centre and Calgary Urban Project Society.
  • Student Appeals: advocating for University of Calgary students, as well as students from other institutions, through the academic and non-academic appeal processes.
  • Trial Confirmation Project: providing legal information for self-represented accused persons at the Calgary Courts Centre.
  • First Appearance Resource Individual Project (Youth Justice Court): providing legal information to accused persons before they meet with the Crown Prosecutor.
